Your Tuesday Village Update #52

March 23, 2021

Dear Villagers,

Continuing with our member suggestions in honor of Women's History Month, we recommend two new books by women about women and segments from Garrison Keillor's The Writer's Almanac.

  • Justice, Justice, Thou Shalt Pursue by Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Link to the NPR interview of co-author Amanda L.Tyler to learn about this book that contains some of RBG's historic opinions.
  • In The Light of Days, Judy Batalion writes of the little known Jewish women who acted bravely in the anti-Nazi resistance. Read the Kirkus review.
  • Enjoy all the segments of Garrison Keillor's The Writer's Almanac of March 10, especially the profiles of Harriet Tubman and Zelda Fitzgerald.

Reminder: Have you sent your recipe to Pauline Derby? Enter the Recipe Raffle by March 31 for a chance to win a $25 Market Basket card.

And here's another chance to register for Standing Up to Racism, which meets weekly on Thursdays, 7:00 to 8:30 PM, starting April 8, 2021. Co-facilitated by Katherine Gendron and Village member Barbara Dowd, this Zoom course focuses on the role White People played in constructing systemic and institutional racism. We examine our own racial awareness stories, learn ways to become allies in anti-racism work, and begin to create action plans to accomplish this. 1-2 hours of pre-work required upon registration. Register online at https://newburyportadulted.org/product/standing-up-to-racism/

A Little Humor

"This is Buddy. I bought him as a surprise present for my husband but it turns out he's allergic to dogs. So unfortunately I'm going to have to find a new home for him and I'm just wondering if anyone out there can help. His name is Alan, he's 61, great at DIY, drives a nice car, and plans wonderful holidays."

Best regards,
The Greater Newburyport Village
