Village Talk: The Culture of Afghanistan with Susan Carnduff (noon)
About this event
Susan Carnduff gives a perspective on Afghan culture, drawing on her experience working and living in the country for 2 1/2 years, with a particular focus on women in public and private lives, in urban and rural settings.
About Susan
Susan lived in Kabul from March 2008 until July 2010, working for the National Democratic Institute (NDI) based in Washington DC. She was the resident Director of NDI’s political development program in Afghanistan, headquartered in Kabul with seven regional offices located around the country. The programs were focused in three areas: women in politics, political party development, and skills development for Provincial Council representatives.
The staff comprised about ninety Afghans, mostly men, and some international staff ( American, English, Australian, Iranian, Slovenian). Having a female Director was an interesting dimension for her and the Afghan staff. Previous related work included seven years in the Balkans (Bosnia, Kosovo), and 2 1/2 years in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Susan currently lives in Newburyport.
